About the Artist
A cell phone is a cell phone is cell phone – or is it? In an era which culturally conditions society to accept virtuality as a virtue, it has become Cell Phone Artist Kyle Sebastién’s mission to render permanent meaning to a temporary experience – such as a conversation on your mobile phone. And he dares to go even further, moving from the abstraction in his early works (at the heart of which lay the process of communication) to centring his art around the gadget itself today, thus setting off a crucial discourse on the nature of modern society. Not only is Kyle Sebastién the initiator of this unique path in modern art, he is, to date, also the only member of the movement he himself terms simply C.P.A. or Cell Phone Art.
“Phone conversations today have become void of significance. That is why cell phones are perfect artefacts, being able to take on any connotation,” explains the artist, whose deconstructionist visions of how technology and politics interact target at consumerism as well as the inadequacy of today’s educational system.
